Love it. So true.
How are the environment, society and economy related?
One view, which is losing supporters by the day, is the ‘mickey mouse’ model, where the economy is the main thing, the environment and people are add-ons.
Growing numbers of people are now coming to realise that the ‘bulls eye’ model is much closer to reality. The economy is a part of society, and society is a part of the environment. Thinking about it this way, it’s obvious that it’s essential to look after the environment if we want a thriving society and economy.
There is another model which fits in between these two, where the three aspects are given equal standing:
This concept is obviously better than the Micky Mouse model, because it accepts that the environment and society are important and related. However it doesn’t reflect the basic fact that society is built on, and couldn’t exist without, the environment, and likewise the economy couldn’t exist without society.

Would people care more about climate change if they knew it was threatening the future of chocolate? I sure do. Climate change isn’t the only threat to global chocolate supplies, so is unfair trade because it means farmers can’t afford to care for their trees properly. Solution? Stick to only buying Fairtrade chocolate, look at ways to reduce your carbon emissions, and USE YOUR VOTE to ensure that your country reduces it’s emissions.

Living in a richer New Zealand is about much more than economic growth. It is about living in a beautiful country where we look after the environment. It is about living in strong communities where people feel connected to each other.
Have you heard of Ekodo? It’s environmentalism as a martial art. Awesome. It was started by my environmental studies lecturer, Sean, several years ago and is still going strong. I went to an ekodo workshop a few days ago and found it really interesting and useful. The link is to his first post on happyzine about it, but he has written lots more about ekodo too, just search ekodo in the happyzine search bar.
Terracycle transforms our garbage. Here is a short video about what the company does as well as a great article about the TerraCycle business model from the New York Times. A fantastic example of Buying Nothing New!
